The facts behind how light can damage the vitamins in your milk

Scientific studies show light damages milk. But how?

Independent studies have shown that light damages milk. One of these studies was published in the Journal of Dairy Science (our favourite read) and shows how milk can start losing vitamin A in as little as two hours of continuous light exposure1. And research supported by the smart folks at Cornell University also shows that light can damage vitamins B2 and A in milk2. Not good.

Not good, because vitamin A is really important for healthy eyesight and a good immune system. And obviously, you need both of these every day. And B2 is just as essential, because it helps your body turn food into fuel, which helps to stop you feeling tired and run down. Some milk even contains added vitamin D, which is great for helping your body absorb calcium.

How much light does your milk see?

By the time it gets to your fridge,
it's been exposed to lots of damaging light.

And as you know by now, this isn't good for the vitamins in milk4,5. There are lights in the factory where the milk is stored (because it's pretty hard for our guys to work in the dark). There are the lights in the delivery truck, lights in the chiller at the store and even the sunlight that your bottle of milk is exposed to on the way home.

Kiwis can recycle Anchor’s Light Proof™ milk bottle exactly as they always have.

Anchor's Light Proof™ bottle is made from the same high-grade, recyclable HDPE plastic as the old bottle. Nothing changes with your kerbside pick-up or drop-off to a rural collection centre. Recycled Anchor bottles are already being used in the production of recycling bins, slip sheets, cable covers, pipes, drainage coils and more. In fact, capacity exists amongst recyclers here in New Zealand to use 100% of recycled Anchor bottles in the manufacture of new products.

What age can I give my child Anchor Uno yoghurt?

Anchor Uno yoghurt has been specially formulated with 5 extra vitamins and minerals to support immunity, based on the recommended dietary intakes for children aged 3-8 years. Anchor Uno yoghurt is also suitable as a delicious serve of dairy for older kids too but it’s important to note that their requirements for vitamins and minerals are generally higher than those of younger kids. So while everyone will receive the calcium and protein benefits of yoghurt, the immunity support bundle is formulated specifically for kids between 3-8 years.

What is in Anchor Uno's immunity bundle and how does it support my kids immunity?

Anchor Uno yoghurt contains iron, zinc, folate, vitamin D and vitamin B6 which scientific studies have shown to have an important role in supporting immune function.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has reviewed the science which helps us understand how nutrients support the immune system including the role of iron in renewing “helper” white blood cells and how vitamin D acts as a regulator of the immune system. Also, deficiencies in zinc, folate, and vitamin B6 have been shown to lead to a decrease in immune function in some populations, which helps to highlight the important role they play in supporting a normal, healthy immune system.

Is it okay for my child to eat Anchor Uno yoghurt regularly?

Yes. New Zealand dietary guidelines recommend children have at least 2-3 serves of core dairy products (milk, cheese and yoghurt) every day. One 150g pottle of Anchor Uno yoghurt counts as one serve towards your child’s daily dairy intake. Anchor Uno is also registered with fuelled4life, the programme for healthy eating in Schools and early childhood education services. What is a probiotic?

The term probiotic means "for life" and is used to describe live bacteria that give a beneficial effect when eaten in the right quantity1. Studies have reported that probiotics can play an important role in digestion and immunity. However, not all probiotics are the same - each strain has different properties and the way they work will differ from one probiotic to the next.

What and how many probiotics are in Anchor Uno yoghurt?

Bifidobacterium lactis is the probiotic in Anchor Uno. Bifidobacterium lactis has been shown to have an important role in a healthy digestive system and help control the balance of ‘good and bad’ bacteria in the gut. Probiotics are measured in what’s called ‘colony forming units’ (cfu). Anchor Uno yoghurt contains 1.5 billion cfu Bifidobacterium lactis probiotics in every 150g serve.

If I am giving my kids probiotics already, is it okay for them to also have Anchor Uno?

Probiotics have a long history of being used in fermented foods and are considered very safe for the general population to consume. Although there is no recommended maximum intake for probiotics, they come in many different forms and may perform different actions in the body so there is no ‘one size fits all’ rule for what quantity of probiotics should be consumed. The amount of Bifidobacterium lactis probiotic in Anchor Uno is not likely to present any risk to children already consuming probiotics. However, as always, we recommend you speak with a health professional for dietary advice tailored to your child’s specific needs.

Is Anchor Uno yoghurt a good source of calcium?

Yes, Anchor Uno is a good source of calcium, with around a quarter of a child’s daily calcium requirements in every 150g serve. However, calcium requirements do vary, depending on age and gender

The pack only includes RDIs for 1-3 year olds? Why is that and can I see the RDI’s for different ages ?

Recommended dietary intakes (RDIs) for vitamins and minerals vary, depending on age and gender. To keep the nutrition information panel simple to read and adhere to our requirements under Australia New Zealand food regulations, we’ve used RDIs for just one age group (children aged 1-3 years). However, Anchor Uno yoghurt has been specially formulated with 5 extra vitamins and minerals to support immunity, based on the RDIs for children aged 1-3 and 4-8 years.

Anchor Uno yoghurt is also a delicious serve of dairy for older kids to eat but their requirements for vitamins and minerals are generally higher than for younger kids

How much sugar is in Anchor Uno yoghurt?

Anchor Uno yoghurt contains around 10-12g sugar per 100g (depending on the flavour). When formulating Anchor Uno we ensured it adhered to the Ministry of Health Food and Beverage Classification System which aims to restrict children’s intake of sugar. Anchor Uno is registered with fuelled4life, the programme for healthy eating in schools and early childhood education services.

Is there added sugar in Anchor Uno?

Around 10% of the sugar in Anchor Uno is lactose (milk sugar) which naturally occurs in the milk we use to make our products. The remainder comes from natural sugar (sucrose) that we add to Anchor Uno

Can my child have Anchor Uno yoghurt if they are having a multivitamin?

Anchor Uno yoghurt contains 5 essential vitamins and minerals which help to support kids’ immunity. Anchor Uno on its own will not provide an excess of any vitamins or minerals if consumed in moderation, for example, one a day. However, if your child is also having a multivitamin with high levels of vitamins and minerals and you are concerned they may be having too much of any nutrient, we recommend you speak with a health professional for advice tailored to your child’s needs. Can my child have Anchor Uno yoghurt instead of taking a multivitamin?

Dietary supplements may be required in some circumstances, such as when a child is on a restricted diet due to a food allergy. If your child has been prescribed a dietary supplement for health or medical reasons, taking Anchor Uno yoghurt instead may not provide the additional nutrient(s) they need. Anchor Uno yoghurts packaging says it's a "Formulated Supplementary Food for Young Children", what does that mean?

Anchor Uno has been specially formulated with added iron, zinc, folate, vitamin D and vitamin B6 to support kids’ immunity. The additional vitamins and minerals, plus the natural dairy protein and energy content of Anchor Uno can be useful to supplement a diet which may be low in energy or vitamins and minerals. Foods that are used to help supplement a diet in this age group are called Formulated Supplementary Foods for Young Children as that’s the official name for this category of food under Australia New Zealand food regulations.

Does Anchor Uno yoghurt count as a 'serve of dairy'?

How much dairy should Kiwi kids be eating?

No, Anchor Uno contains gelatine to give the yoghurt the thick, smooth texture so is not suitable for vegetarians.

Is Anchor Uno Halal?

No, not all the ingredients found in Anchor Uno are certified Halal

Is Anchor Uno okay if my child lactose intolerant?

Lactose intolerance is a condition where people may be unable to tolerate significant quantities of lactose (the naturally occurring sugar in milk) as they have a shortage of the enzyme (lactase) which breaks the lactose down in order to digest it. The severity and symptoms of lactose intolerance may vary from person to person but many people may be able to consume some dairy products, such as hard cheese - which is naturally very low in lactose - and yoghurt - which contains live cultures which have already broken down some of the lactose.

Lactose intolerance is different to cow’s milk allergy which is a severe and potentially life threatening condition where all dairy products must be strictly avoided. Anchor Uno yoghurt is NOT suitable for someone with a dairy or cow’s milk allergy.

If you have questions about lactose intolerance or dairy/cow’s milk allergy, speak with a health professional for confirmation and advice specific to your child’s needs.

What are the allergens in Anchor Uno?

The main allergen in Anchor Uno yoghurt is milk. Anchor Uno contains no other ingredients that are required to be declared as common allergens; however, we recommend you read the ingredients list carefully and consult with a health professional if you have any concerns about a specific allergen. FAQs

Is Anchor™ Milk Pasteurised or Homogenised?

Yes, Anchor™ milk is pasteurised. In fact, all milk that retails for sale in New Zealand needs to be pasteurised to make sure it's safe to drink. Basically pasteurisation involves rapidly heating the milk to 72°C for only 15 seconds. This destroys any bacteria that maybe present which could make you sick, without changing the wonderful fresh taste.

As well as being pasteurised, most of our Anchor™ milk products that contain fat are homogenised as well. This is when the fat droplets within the milk are reduced in size by being squeezed through a really tiny gap, just like a fine sieve that you use at home. Homogenising milk means that all the nutrients, and that delicious taste, stay consistent from the very first drop, to the very last one.

You'll know a non-homogenised milk product when you see it because a cream layer forms, floating on the top. It's nothing to worry about, this is simply because milk-fat (cream) is lighter than milk so it rises to the surface. It's what you'll see in our traditional Anchor™ Silver Top milks which contain non-homogenised cream.

Our lower fat milks aren't homogenised, because they have so little fat there's just no need.

Is your fresh milk made from reconstituted milk powder?

Definitely not! Take a look at the ingredients list on the Anchor™ milk label. The ingredients list can sometimes be declared as milk, cream or ultrafiltered milk, but unless we've specifically said otherwise, you can rest assured the only ingredient used in our fresh milk is ... fresh cow's milk!

Can you freeze milk?

We do not recommend that you freeze your milk. This is because milk expands when you freeze it, which can cause the bottle to split.

Why has my milk separated?

One reason your milk could separate is if you've frozen and defrosted it several times. This can change the structure of the milk protein and the fat so the cream rises to the top and the proteins sink to the bottom. It might look a bit odd, but separated milk is still safe to drink if food safety precautions have been followed.

The other reason that your milk could separate is that it's started to spoil or go ‘off'. As good as it is, no milk lasts forever. Once milk is past its expiry date, or if it hasn't been stored properly under refrigeration, bacteria may start to grow in it, changing the pH level and causing the milk to separate. This milk will also start to smell ‘off' or have a bad odour, so smelling milk before you drink it can be an indicator of shelf life. Milk isn't safe to drink when it's past the expiry date, so please make sure you throw it away.

Why does my milk have particles in the bottom of it?

Fresh Anchor™ milk should never have anything that looks like particles in the bottom of it – please don't drink it if it looks like that. But if you've frozen and thawed the milk a couple of times already, milk separation can occur because of the changing protein structures. In this case, while it might look a bit odd, it's still safe to drink if food safety precautions have been followed.

Why does my milk have lumps in it?

Fresh Anchor™ milk should never have lumps in it. Please don't drink milk that looks like that.

The most common reason for ‘lumpy' milk is that it's going off. Basically it's starting to spoil and you're seeing a reaction to the bacteria growing in the milk. You need to throw it away the milk when it gets to this stage, as it's not safe to consume anymore. Remember to always keep your milk refrigerated below 4°C and use the expiry dates on the packaging as your guide for best milk quality.

Does milk contain gluten and Wheaten?

Fresh Anchor™ milk is made from cow's milk only and does not contain added gluten or wheat ingredients.

Please be aware that some of our other Anchor™ products, like flavoured milk or yoghurt, have added ingredients that may contain gluten or wheat. At Anchor™ , we're incredibly stringent with ingredients choosing allergen-free options whenever we can.

If you do have a food intolerance or an allergy, as always, please read the label and check the ingredients declaration on pack. We aim to ensure that our Anchor™ milk products have current, accurate label information and we clearly identify potential allergens in the ingredient list.

I have some milk that tastes strange, what should I do?

If you think you have an Anchor™ milk product that isn't up to our normal high standards, you should contact our customer service team and they'll be able to assist you. Please note that dairy products can pick up the flavour of what they're stored next to in the refrigerator if it has a particularly intense taste or smell, such as a cut unwrapped onion, so keep all food items stored in the refrigerator wrapped or covered, including milk.

Is Anchor™ milk Halal, Vegetarian, Vegan or Kosher?

For ovo/lacto vegetarian eating plans, milk and dairy products are usually suitable to include. Please check the ingredient list on the label of flavoured milk or yoghurt. For vegan eating plans, please note that Anchor™ milk is made from cow's milk which is an animal derived product.

Anchor™ milk products are not certified as Kosher or a Halal in New Zealand.

Yes, of course you can! We aim to ensure the ingredients and nutritional information on every Anchor™ milk label complies with FSANZ (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) requirements under the Food Standards Code legislation.

No specific qualifications are required however you will ideally have an all-round understanding of the operation and dynamics of a business.

An understanding of the Franchise model and excellent customer service skills are advantageous.

Our existing Franchisees have a wide variety of qualifications and experience, which is a reflection of the wide-ranging skills and challenges required by the business. They operate in a highly competitive dairy and non-dairy beverages & food market with changing consumer needs.

Anchor Franchisees service three main customer groups:

  • Independent shops and dairies


  • Factories, schools, cafes & restaurants

  • Service stations, catering companies, and on-behalf businesses.

Our Franchisees in non-metropolitan areas may also service Key Supermarkets. The mix of customer groups varies between Franchise areas, just to keep things interesting and dynamic.

What investment do you need to make?

Depending on the business performance and location, typically $500,000 - $800,000 + bond and working capital is required. You will also need to purchase assets such as vehicles.

The Anchor Franchisee system will provide you with support, knowledge, and a network of like-minded business owners. Our agreements cover a ten year term, with rights of renewal based on performance.
